A little home oasis in Atlanta

1e Julia Cassidy is an architect and a traveler by heart. It is hard for her to stay in one place for a long period of time. She is still in a search of her “Home”.  However, in every place she manages to create her little oasis, bring a piece of her own identity to it in spite of the fact that it is temporary.

What is a home?

Home is a place where I create/design so it is important to be myself in it. A place where I make dinner in my pj’s, eat it sitting on the floor next to my dog watching a show and be OK with it because I am home.

Where are you from and where do you live now?

I was born and raised in Siberia, in Omsk and now live in the South USA, in Atlanta.

What was your inspiration while creating your home?

My inspiration is always the light. It is the most important feature for me. As an architect I’ve learned to appreciate natural light and take advantage of it. I live in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Atlanta, it is quite charming with its 100-year old trees lining up the streets and creating lots of shade. Therefore my apartment does not get enough sunlight. I took a minimalist approach to brighten up my place, painted walls in white and decluttered, I literary have 4 pieces of furniture including my bike which I believe completes my apartment.

What is your favorite part of the house?

My favorite space in my home is the stairs actually; the entrance to my home is surrounded by trees that make it very private. I have a summer weekend morning ritual with my dog where I have my coffee on the stairs and she is right next to me begging for a piece of bread. For me it is the best time of the day and this is one of those moments that no one would understand I guess and it’s OK because I am Home.

What do you do first when you come home?

First thing I do when I come home is make tea in my second favorite space in my home, my coffee/tea corner. I created it as I thought that coffee/tea takes such a great part of my daily life so it definitely deserves its own space.

With what smell do you associate your home with?

The smell of Magnolias and jasmine in the summer, because they grow everywhere in this neighborhood and in my backyard, I love having my windows open and the sweet scent just comes with the wind. I think I will always associate this smell with this apartment when I move.

And what about sound?

The sounds of the city, I live in the center of the city so it gets pretty loud; trains, sirens, cars, and restaurants up and down the street, I love it. My place is pretty secluded from all that noise by buildings and trees, so I can hear them as if they are far away. It just makes my place feel very safe.
