La Rosaleda – the rose garden at Retiro Park
It is not a secret that gardens have an enormous power on us. They can elevate our mood, inspire us, and bring back lots of memories. When I need a breath of fresh air and to retreat in Madrid, La Rosaleda is my favorite place to come.
It was designed in 1915 in order to create a more elegant look in this part of the Retiro Park. The gardener Cecilio Rodríguez travelled to Paris to get the inspiration from the garden La Roseraie de Bagatelle and brought back with him the fist roses for the garden in Madrid.
Would you like to do the same one day for your garden?
During the Civil War in Spain the original rose garden was destroyed and in 1941 it was recreated. As some Madrileños complained that the garden has a lack of order, the second rose garden was created in 1956 at the Parque del Oeste in a more formal style. But for me La Rosaleda in Retiro is precious.
The colorful playful oasis with more than 4000 roses, in the center of big city, is a little bit wild but secretive, cozy, and inviting. It is a perfect alternative for someone whose home garden is many kilometers away.
